Camote (sweet potato) - a possible cure for Dengue?

As I was writing an article about 2008 as the Year of the Potato according to United Nation, an email arrived on my inbox stating that “Cure for dengue - camote tops”. Indeed a post was made on PinoBusiness.ORG regarding this email.

It is said the soup made from camote tops specifically the purple sweet potato can make Dengue patient’s platelets count back to normal. Although, still not proven to cure Dengue completely.

Last month, I donated my blood to my friend who was diagnosed with Dengue. I’ve learned that Dengue is an incurable disease even in our modern time. There are no specific antiviral medicines for it. Dengue is extremely infectious being tagged as the most infectious of all insect-borne diseases.

And since, conventionally there is no medicine that can cure Dengue, the email I received is a big relief to all those patients who might want to check it. There’s no harm in trying the soup from camote tops. The medicinal values of eating this root crop have been long known to a lot of people. Actually, sweet potato or camote is listed as one of the world’s healthiest food (source:www.whfoods.org). One of the unique health benefit that have been observed is that it has significant anti-oxidant capacities - simply mean it has ‘healing power’! This root vegetable is an excellent source of Vitamin A and a very good source of vitamin C.

Also it was suggested on the research conducted at Kansas State University, if you or someone you know is a smoker ( or just simply being exposed as a secondhand smoker), then eating sweet potatoes being rich in vitamin A, may save your life.Now, it’s about time for the modern science to take a look on this and time for us to ” Go home and plant camote …so we can fight Dengue!”
